It has become common knowledge that, when an observer gazes up at the stars from Earth, they see them as they were at some point in the distant past. Furthermore, the further away these stars are, the further back in time they appear from the present. What is not as often discussed, however, is that in this same model of understanding, the observer is looking upon those stars as they were at a time when the universe was significantly smaller. Were anyone to build a telescope which could see the furthest edge of the universe, they would see it as it existed at the moment time began: a moment when it was so small that, paradoxically, its edge was closer to the point occupied by the observer’s eye than their own telescope’s lens.

The Tunneler Engine employed by modern spacecraft takes advantage of this anomaly in the properties of space-time. Because the bottom of the universe is never more than a single Planck length away, it is possible, with a sufficiently sharp drill, to pierce this surface and pass “beneath” it. The realm which one then enters, which could just as well be said to be no realm at all, is referred to by those who traverse it as “Underspace.”

To travel through Underspace, outside of both space and time, is to travel through a cosmos where every object is entirely unrelated to any other, suspended in an absence of medium. Every last particle of the traveller passing through it, as well as those of the mechanism that allows them to do so, exists in total isolation from any other particle or force whatsoever. As such, it takes an exceptionally sharp drill to pierce the absence of a medium separating them, one which culminates in a tip thinner than any of the particles from which it is composed.

While it is one problem to enter Underspace, it is another altogether to exit. To tunnel upwards from never and nowhere, then arrive at a defined point in space-time, is to experience the entire birth and expansion of the universe around it. Such a thing can be profoundly disorienting for the first-time traveller, and often results in delusions of godhood. This is because, for them, the act of leaving Underspace is visually indistinguishable from the experience of having destroyed, then rebuilt the entire universe with one’s self at its center.

Traveling from one universe to another can be just as complicated.

Due to a technicality, Meinong’s Jungle and Underspace cannot intersect.

Dreaming backwards can result in an inadvertent trip through Underspace.

like there’s this whole thing in this book about how your brain grows stronger and healthier by practicing responding to stress in healthy ways,

because if a stressor is predictable and you feel a sense of control over it, you habituate and stop reacting to it,

but if it’s random and unpredictable you have the opposite response and become sensitized, so your reaction actually gets more and more extreme.

(if you hear a loud noise at predictable intervals you’ll soon stop noticing or reacting, but if you hear it at random intervals you’ll become sensitive to it and anxious.)

so one way to help people who have adverse reactions to reminders of trauma is to give them control over how they’re reminded of the trauma,

because it helps the brain practice responding to stress in a safe way so you can habituate to the stress response.


which is why if someone tags something for a trigger and you still choose to look,

it’s actually an act of healthy resistance against your reaction to that trigger (because it teaches your brain to habituate),

but encountering something triggering in a random and unpredictable way actually increases your stress response and makes you more sensitive to the trigger.

so people who are against trigger warnings because “you have to learn to cope” are actually taking away your tools for learning to cope,

because encountering stressors in a way that further strips you of control over your trauma is never, ever helpful.

Methodology:

Characters were counted by hand based on UESP quest writeups. Characters were only counted if they were questgivers or involved in multiple quests. Only characters from the main quest or faction questlines were counted. Any expansions or DLCs have not been included.

Due to the incomplete documentation for ESO quests, that game probably has more margin of error than others, though it should be balanced out due to how many NPCs were counted overall. I realize that this is an imperfect process, especially considering the very different ways that each game handles quests. I think the overall patterns hold, though, even if the percentages might be off a few points were someone to repeat the process.

You’ll also notice that Morrowind, Oblivion, and ESO have two main quest graphs. The latter is for including characters who are also encountered in the other parts of the game. For Morrowind this is questlines where you must speak to all the house leaders to become Hortator, in Oblivion it is the Aid for Bruma questline where you must speak to the counts/countesses to gain their support, and in ESO this is the Weight of Three Crowns quest where the faction leaders convene on Stirk. Daggerfall, meanwhile, randomizes most of its quest, and the overall graph counts the main quest and nobles quests.

Sample sizes are as follows: Daggerfall (23 total, 10 main quest), Morrowind (82 total, 16 main quest, 34 with hortator), Oblivion (36 total, 9 main quest, 15 with Bruma allies), Skyrim (59, 11 main quest), ESO (278 total, 6 main quest, 10 with Stirk).
